The HJ aimed to: control the activities of young people outside the classroom; make them loyal to Hitler; train boys to be soldiers and prepare girls to be wives and mothers. It was based initially in the Rhineland. Members reacted to the discipline of the Hitler Youth by daubing anti-Nazi slogans and singing pre folk songs.
Their main activity was camping trips to the countryside to get away from the stifling control of the Nazis. In , over of them were arrested. However, the activities of the Pirates did not endear themselves to Heinrich Himmler who required all Germans to be totally obedient.
He ordered a crackdown on all youths who seemed to be failing in their total loyalty to Hitler and the Nazi state. In a letter from Himmler to Reinhard Heydrich January the head of the SS wrote that a half-measured approach to any youth groups that failed to show total loyalty was unacceptable and that members of any such groups had to be dealt with accordingly. Company Reg no: He says like many Germans he knew nothing about the Edelweiss Pirates despite having grown up in Cologne. He said that if there is one hero in the country then the rest of the country could say they knew nothing about what was going on.
But if there is one hero on every street, then it looks bad for the rest of the street. The rehabilitation of the Edelweiss pirates has once again touched upon the sense of collective post war guilt in Germany.

It's taken 60 years, and six more months won't make much difference. Tuesday marks the 60th anniversary of Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg's attempt to assassinate Hitler. While some debate whether he acted out of personal interest or altruism, most Germans are taking a positive view.
