Okonkwo does not understand why he would ever do this, and instead of thinking of the abuse Nwoye experienced he instead gets angry.

This character, Okonkwo, is prestigious within his community, and in most respects views himself and is viewed by his neighbors as an honorable man. Yet for all his seeming honor, Okonwko self-destructs when his world begins to change. Although the value system held by Okonkwo's village may differ somewhat from that held by other cultures, his particular experience during colonization is universal. When Okonkwo defines himself as an honorable man and thinks back upon his life achievements that have made him so, he focuses most strongly upon his ferocity.

The main character is Okonkwo, a respected and influential leader within the community of the village, who became powerful and wealthy as a result of his very strong conviction. Despite looking like this very strong man, Okonkwo was driven by fear: fear of change and losing his self-worth. That fear made him go through and experience different feelings, different stages, different attitudes and sometimes cruel principles.

The novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, revolves around the strong and masculine tribesman, Okonkwo, living in a small village in Nigeria. In the first half of his story, it tells about Okonkwo's slow fall in his tribe's society. From being the amazing wrestler who threw the undefeated "Amalinze the Cat", Okonkowo had it all. Until the death of a boy who was like another son to him made him feel like an old, withering woman and changes his way of living. Things began to get much worse when European settlers began to colonize in his tribe's land and convert his tribe to their religion.

However, Ezinma lives past the age of three and, with the help of the medicine man, breaks away from the hold of her ogbanje, or evil spirit. How does Okonkwo die? Okonkwo's suicide is an unspeakable act that strips him of all honor and denies him the right to an honorable burial. Okonkwo dies an outcast, banished from the very society he fought to protect.
