We define spinning as the rotation of any figure over degrees before or over degrees after hitting the ball. It means that when you rotate the rod more than a complete round before or after hitting, the ball is known as spinning.
But if you rotate the rod without hitting the ball, then it is not considered a foul. Hitting the ball is a must. Spinning is illegal in foosball as it takes away the skill from the game. It is one of the fundamental rules in foosball and is used everywhere besides variations of the game.
Spinning is intolerable in official games. It is considered being a cheater, or at least a rule breaker. The player spinning the rod could be penalized for it, depending on the game. For beginners, the charges could be negligible, but in competitive matches, one mistake can finish your whole game. Seriously talking, there is no advantage of spinning. In actuality, it delays the pace of playing and learning the game. Usually, players try to spin their rods randomly to avoid their opponent to hit the ball into the goal.
By doing this though, they cannot learn the game strategically. It might help you in winning your match, but once you have won, then you will think of it as a good trick and try to use it more often. This will lead to poor gaming and illegal playing. Spinning is considered being bad in any game of foosball, as it is an uncontrollable movement. Sometimes, your figure can hit the ball and can miss and others go in.
Any player using spinning shows a lack of skills. It is normally used by players that are new to the game. It is also considered amateur behavior. It also implies a bad ideology towards the game. The ball must be touched at least once before a goal for that goal to count. Remember that you should be switching back and forth between who serves the ball, based on who got scored against last.
Sometimes, in foosball, the ball gets stuck, and no one can get to it. It is illegal to reach into the table and give the ball a little push in these situations. It is also illegal to try to shake the table to get the ball to move. See the note about jarring, below.
The regulation rule in this situation is to pick up the ball and re-serve it. The last person to serve is the person who will re-serve the ball in response to a dead zone. The main rule, in Foosball, that everyone breaks, is no spinning. That means that you cannot make any of your rods do a rotation. And yes, that's a little bit of a bummer, given that making them spin uncontrollably is fun. But if you're playing regulation rules, it's not allowed.
You can, however, turn your rod up to 90 degrees so that the feet are facing the sky. You shouldn't need to go any farther than that for shooting. If you're turning your man to reach the ball, it's okay to go more than 90 degrees, but as soon as you do a full flip, you've violated the rule. There is no rule, however, that you can't spin them just for fun if you're messing around or practicing by yourself.
If the ball is stuck, please refer to the ball dead zone rule, above. Do not, under any circumstances, jar, push, rock, or otherwise attempt to move the ball by moving the table. That's called jarring and is sometimes done to free the ball, but is more often used to throw off an opponent.
It's illegal in foosball for that second reason, so keep that in mind. Jarring includes banging your rod against the walls of the table, as well. Basically, if it jolts the table, it's not allowed. In the rules of the game, a spin is defined as any movement of a row of foosmen that makes them rotate degrees along their axis, which is essentially a no-tolerance policy towards spins.
On the other hand, there can also be a little bit more leniency if you get caught spinning, and this is typically in beginner matches. You may receive repeated warnings for spinning your rods before eventually being penalized, though this is usually not the case in more competitive environments. You may also find some foosball rule sets that will make exceptions for a certain number of spins, but this is not the case with the official rules used in tournaments. We also mentioned that some modified rule sets allow for a certain number of spins before it is considered illegal.
